Power:Ed Awards $57,050 to Literacy Center
The Literacy Center in Bluffton, SC has received a $57,050 grant from Power:Ed. The grant will help them continue developing a literate workforce.
The Literacy Center in Bluffton, SC has received a $57,050 grant from Power:Ed.
The grant will help The Literacy Center, which serves Beaufort and Jasper counties, continue their work to develop a literate workforce, educate students to qualify for the GED, become citizens, and prepare individuals for positive community engagement during the COVID-19 crisis. Due to pandemic restrictions, the organization has had to lean more heavily on virtual teaching. The funding from this grant will provide computers and software on loan to help their students learn remotely. The funding will also help train tutors to teach classes via virtual classrooms. Additionally, they will be upgrading their student portal and other interactive features to help support remote learning.
“We are humbled and honored to be chosen as the recipient of the Power:Ed grant which will fund the expansion of our distance learning literacy program and workplace development program,” says Brad Steele, Executive Director of The Literacy Program. “For 47 years, The Literacy Center has been the only non-profit serving the educational and workplace development needs of adult learners in Beaufort County. This grant will ensure that hundreds of new students will have access to our online programs and can participate in our workforce training programs. Power:Ed’s investment will help break the generational cycles of low literacy and poverty in our community.”
Power:Ed, a philanthropy of SC Student Loan is dedicated to creating opportunities for South Carolina’s youth by supporting low-income, minority, and first-generation students; improving access to college and degree completion; and creating pathways to quality workforce opportunities.
